The Region
Oberwald is the highest village in the Goms holiday region of
the Upper Valais. Recharge your batteries in the area’s mild
climate, surrounded by wooden chalets and a lovely, natural setting.
There are a lot of sports activities on offer. The village is an
ideal starting point for cycling tourists headed for the Rhone and
the Aare Routes. Cross-country skiers will find the spot heaven on
earth during winter. It gives access to 100 km of meticulously
groomed tracks, one of Switzerland’s longest networks and a
comfortable way of exploring the entire valley. A tobogganing run as
well as ski lifts make for a family-friendly holiday. From spring
until autumn, when the leaves turn colourful, you can enjoy hiking,
mountain biking, rafting and climbing in the surrounding forests.
Oberwald is also a must for railway enthusiasts. On a meter-gauge
track, the cogwheel railway on the Furka mountain line is pulled by
steam engines, some of which are 100 years old. Oberwald lies by the
entrance to the Furka base tunnel and on the mythic Glacier Express
railway line that links Zermatt and St Moritz.
The Rhone Glacier, source of the eponymous river, is another
major attraction of the area. It is easily accessible thanks to the
ice grotto dug into the glacier’s ice.
How about an excursion to some of the most beautiful Swiss high
mountain passes, gateways to incredibly different regions ? Furka
Pass leads you into Central Switzerland. Continuing over Oberalp
Pass you’ll reach Graubünden. The Bernese Oberland spreads before
your eyes on the other side of Grimsel Pass and Ticino beckons
beyond the Nufenen Pass. Yet maybe, alone the beauty you will find
in the Goms Valley and the scenic treasures in the Valais will make
you perfectly happy.
